Treasure Map info

Every Tuesday night around 9:30 pm EST, our FC holds a Treasure Map Hunt for interested members. Since some players don't know what's involved in this, here's a quick write-up of what this event is, who can participate, and what the potential rewards are.

Treasure Maps are items that are found by Gatherers starting at level 40. (Fishers must activate the special ability "Snagging" to find them.) They come in various kinds according to the level of the node or fishing hole they were gathered from, like so:

Heavensward added three new types of maps: Timeworn Archaeoskin Maps for level 55 solo, Timeworn Wyvernskin Maps for level 60 solo, and Timeworn Dragonskin Maps for level 60 group.

Each gatherer can only gather one map every 18 hours, but the maps are freely tradeable and can be sold on the Market Board.

To use a Treasure Map, a player must complete a short quest line at level 36 that begins by talking to the NPC H'loonh in Eastern La Noscea (x21,y21). This will give the player the new actions "Decipher", allowing treasure maps to be read, and "Dig", allowing treasure chests to be uncovered.

When a treasure map is deciphered, the player is given a picture of a small part of a zone map and told which zone the clip is from. The player's job is to open up the zone map (which can be done by clicking on the treasure map) and use the features in the clip to find the chest location on the larger zone map. The player than goes to that location and uses the "Dig" command. If they are in the right location, a treasure chest will appear. Upon opening the chest, a number of monsters of the treasure map's level will spawn. If the player defeats the monsters, the treasure in the chest can then be claimed. The player has a time limit of five minutes from the time the chest is dug up to defeat all monsters, or the chest disappears and no treasure is awarded.

Players can do as many treasure maps as they like at any time, but can only carry a maximum of two maps at the same time – one deciphered, one undeciphered. You can store a single undeciphered map on each of your retainers for later use.

The treasure gained from the chests is fairly random in terms of value – many chests only gain you a number of crafting materials which may or may not have value. However, chests have the possibility of dropping some very rare and therefore valuable items, including minions that are not available anywhere else in game (such as Nutkin, Bluebird, and Paissa Brat), some items not available elsewhere (Spriggan cap), and some very rare crafting materials such as Thavnairian Leather and Thavnairian Silk. In the last patch, Square also added items needed for the new Anima Relic quest line as possible drops in the highest level maps (Timeworn Wyvernskin and Timeworn Dragonskin), so these maps have increased greatly in price on the Market Board.

How Astral Flame Does Treasure Maps, and Why

On Tuesday nights around 9:30 pm EST, our FC gets together to do the toughest maps (Timeworn Dragonskin) as a group. These Maps can be successfully done in a group of 3-4 people, but we usually try to do a group of 8 in order to be as efficient as possible and get as many chests as we can in a few hours. If we have more than 8 people who want to participate, we will split into two groups. If there is room in the group, people can bring their Chocobo mounts along to get some experience for them. These maps are all in the Heavensward area, so you need to have the expansion installed to participate. Being able to fly in all areas is helpful – a few chests are found in areas accessible only with flight – but if you cannot fly, some FC members have two-seater chocobos and a lift may be available to let you participate. Feel free to ask!

Any player who can access the Heavensward areas is welcome to join; level 60 is not required!

Each player is asked to bring two maps to the event, one deciphered and one undeciphered. (After deciphering, maps can be found in your Key Item inventory. Select "Use" to display the treasure map.) Maps can be gathered or bought off the MB. If you have not completed the quest to open the Dig and Decipher actions, you cannot decipher maps of your own or dig up chests, but you are still welcome to show up to the fights and roll on items except the Anima Relic drops. (Unidentifiable Ore). If you cannot gather maps and can't afford to buy them off the MB, some FC members may be able to provide maps for you to use. Again, feel free to ask!

Most of the items gained after a chest is found drop straight into the inventories of players in the group at random; these are usually crafting items, some of which have decent value on the Market Board. Feel free to use these, sell them, or donate them to your favorite crafter or to the FC chest, whatever you like. When a rare item drops, all group members may roll need on it, with the exception that Unidentifiable Ores go to the player that purchased or found the map, if they want it. The owner of the map can decide who should get the Anima Relic item if they don't want it themselves, or they can throw it open to the group. Note that the Unidentifiable Ore is the only dropped item that CANNOT BE TRADED once it is claimed, so be careful! All other items found in the chest are freely tradeable.

The most desirable tradeable items that can drop from the Timeworn Dragonskin maps are currently two rare Minions (Bluebird and Paissa Brat), and the Thavnairian Leather and Thavnairian Silk crafting materials. All these things sell on the Market Board for a good amount of gil, with the minions generally bringing the most. These maps can also drop the rare green item Hidden Leather Map, which leads to a soloable chest in Eorzea that may drop the Nutkin minion (very valuable!) and the Spriggan Cap.

What we usually do is group up at the FC House, pass out maps until everyone has the limit of two, then find our first set of locations. We then go from zone to zone to uncover the chests and reap the rewards. When you locate your chest, you can inform the rest of the party and set a flag by opening the full zone map, then holding control and right-clicking your mouse on the spot where your chest is. This will put a position marker in the party chat; hit return and the position will be posted to the party. (For console the command is: L1+R1 to set marker, [Square] -> link)

I haven't yet uncovered all of the map area in HW…wondering what happens if I get a map in an area where I can't cross reference due to lack of visual on the actual map area. I have opened part of Sea of Clouds, and all of Dravanian Forelands, Hinterlands, and Churning Mists. I've tried running north in Sea of Clouds but I guess that's MSQ dependant??

I'm not positive but I guess you would just have a map you couldn't locate. If you want to map out the areas you're missing, catch me when I'm on and I can give you a taxi ride to the areas you're currently locked out of so you can map them! That should fix the potential problem.

I did a quick Google to try and find the answer to your question but had no luck. If you should happen to decipher a map in an area you haven't uncovered yet, let me know what happens, I'm curious!

Last night, I googled it too, same results.
Taxi sounds good if you have the time, I really don't want to impose. I can continue to plow through story line on my own if it doesn't work.
