Last night we held a pilot run of an FC game called Lawn Darts, or Splat! After a decent amount of experimentation with rules and format, we were able to successfully play three rounds of SPLAT! and award Mandragora Minion prizes to the winners!

The Thrilling Third Round Finish!

Here are the rules for Lawn Darts/SPLAT! that we worked out and will be using in future games, unless we think of something better:

Lawn Darts, the Game! (aka SPLAT!)

Game Objective: Launch yourself from the top of a cliff and try to hit the target below!

Set up:

1. Find a nice tall cliff with some critters at the top that you can easily aggro. We used one just north of Bentbranch, at the top of the Matron’s Lethe. We’ve scouted out a couple of different locations to use for future games.

2. Set up a target at the bottom of the cliff. If you have eight people or less you can use a Waymark for a nice bright target, but we discovered that marking a target everyone could see with more than eight people was a bit of an issue, as the Alliance system doesn’t seem to let you group up unless you have three full parties of eight (a real oversight on Square’s part, in my opinion! Right now there is no way to group up any number of people between eight and twenty-four.) We ended up using a Summoned pet as a target (Titan seemed to be the most visible) . It’s possible to make separate parties and have the leaders all set the waymark on top of the Summon for better target visibility.

3. One person – who should be an Arcanist of some kind with a Pet to use as a target – is the Game Master / Judge. Silly outfit optional but strongly encouraged. If the Judge doesn’t have a Rez, then you may need a second person to help pick up the bodies at appropriate points.

4. The rest of the players go to the top of the cliff. Using some order, they take turns grabbing aggro on a mob, letting it hit them once, and then charging off the cliff, aiming for the target below. The goal is to land with your head as close to the target at possible!

  • Originally we had a more vague idea of having it be “whoever is closest to the target” but given the different sizes of Lala and Roe bodies, this turned out to be impossible to judge. Players should be reminded that they will keel over backward when they land and they should take this into account when jumping for best accuracy!
  • The original plan was to have people go in alphabetical order by first name with the first person going last in the next round so as to rotate the order, but this turned out to be unnecessary with the Retry rules (below). Basically people can jump in any order they want and things work out!

5. After landing, the jumper has ten seconds to ask for a Retry or to decide to Keep the jump result. The Keep decision is final – no more retries after that! A jumper can have up to three retries. The jumpers should keep track of the number if people get confused, as the Judge probably won’t be able to, in my experience. The jumper is responsible for asking for a retry by typing “Retry”. If you are rezzed, you lose your jump. Note that if you get rezzed by accident you don’t have to accept it.

6. Failing to Die on landing is a foul and the player must go back to the top and jump again. To avoid this foul, jumpers should not play Ninja during this game! Also, if you are a tank or a dragoon, consider taking off your gear before jumping, or switching to a low-level class. Be sure to establish good aggro before jumping as well.

When all players have chosen Keep, or have exhausted their attempts, the Judge will declare the winner(s) and award any prizes!
